ENDODONTIEndodontics is a discipline that deals with the treatment of dental nerves and the tissue surrounding the roots. An endodontist is a dental specialist that receives 5 years of dentistry education and an extra 5 years of specialist education in the field of root canal treatments and prepares and submits a doctorate thesis. An endodontist treats numerous patients during the course of this education and acquires the skills to undertake very complicated treatments and procedures.

The treatment of tooth aches, hot-cold sensitivity, tooth abscesses, tooth discolorations and accidentally damaged teeth fall within the scope of endodontic treatments.

Teeth are comprised of the crown, which is the part of the teeth visible from the opening of the mouth and roots. Crowns and root canals contain the dental nerves. These canals not only contain the dental nerves, but are also comprised of ligaments (collagen tissue), blood and lymphatic vessels. A healthy tooth is nourished by the pulpa (dental nerves) and maintains its livelihood.

Root canal treatment is the process of removing the infected or dead dental pulp that may cause toothache or the formation of abscesses and cysts from the root canals and completely filling the canals with materials that are not harmful for patients' health.

At this stage, if the degraded enamel tissue is not repaired through natural mechanisms, loss of tooth matter occurs and the cavities become permanent.

The cavities that start off with a loss of tooth matter pass through the enamel and begin to get closer to the dental nerves. At this stage, patients begin to experience hot-cold sensitivity. The treatment of such cavities involves the cleaning of the cavity and filling it with appropriate materials.


When the cavities progress and reach the dental nerves, they may cause the nerves to become infected. Infection of the dental nerves cause severe toothaches. In such a case, root canal treatments are conducted.

If the infected dental nerves are not removed from the root canals, bacteria reproduces in the canals and cause dental nerves (dental pulp) to die. Sometimes an abscess may form. A tooth containing a dead dental nerve poses a great risk for the general health and well-being of the overall body. Even if the dead dental nerves do not cause toothache for a long period of time, they may cause an abscess or a cyst to form.

Sometimes a small protuberance or swelling may occur in the gums that may disappear from time to time. Sometimes there is a discharge from the swollen areas. This is called a dental fistula. This is usually disregarded by patients as it causes no pain. However, root canal treatment must be performed on the effected teeth to overcome the problem.

If root canal treatments are not performed, the abscess may cause damage to the jaw bone and result in bacteria and bacteria by products to spread to the whole body through the blood stream.

The bacteria spreading from an infected tooth may cause adverse effects on numerous organs such as the heart, bladders, skeletal joints, eyes, urinary system or other diseases.

How long can a tooth that has undergone root canal treatment stay in a patient's mouth?

A tooth that has undergone a successful root canal treatment can stay in a patient's mouth for a lifetime; provided sufficient oral hygiene is maintained and the patients visit their dentists regularly for controls.

What is the rate of success of root canal treatments?

The rate of success of a well-conducted, properly implemented root canal treatment is over 90%. The rate of success for teeth that have undergone repeated root canal treatments drops down to 70-80%.
