Oral Care During Pregnancy

Hamilelerde Ağız BakımıRisk of gum disease may increase during pregnancy due to the hormonal changes that occur in the body. In addition, pregnant women who experience nausea and vomiting pose greater risk of developing cavities due to the acidic environment created in their oral cavity. If proper oral hygiene is not properly maintained by the expectant mother during pregnancy due to exhaustion and unwillingness, tooth loss may occur within a short amount of time. This is commonly known in society as losing a tooth for every baby born. However, this can easily be prevented.

Prospective mothers should ideally resolve any dental problems they have such as cavities, gum diseases, buried teeth, etc. before they become pregnant. In addition, they should consult their dentist and be informed of factors to consider and how to maintain oral care during the term of their pregnancy.

If patients are already pregnant, they should be examined by a dentist and problems that need immediate treatment should be planned. Women can receive dental treatment during their pregnancy. The best time for receiving dental treatment when pregnant is between the 3rd and 6th months of pregnancy. Your dentist can treat you when during pregnancy if they follow a few rules. As an expectant mother you should refrain from being exposed to radiation, especially in the first 3 months of your pregnancy. In cases where an x-ray is absolutely necessary, care should be taken for expectant mothers to wear lead lined protective aprons and x-ray dosages administered should be lowered. Relatively less severe dental treatments and tooth extractions can be performed during pregnancy. The types of anesthesia administered during treatments and pain killers and antibiotics used during treatment that are suitable for pregnant women have been determined as a result of scientific research and are being used throughout the world as a common protocol. Your dentist will provide you with detailed information regarding this issue.

Particular attention must be paid for maintaining oral hygiene during pregnancy. In order to maintain proper oral hygiene, dental care products advised by your dentist must be used in addition to brushing teeth after every meal. Flossing in addition to brushing your teeth will also be beneficial. In cases where oral hygiene cannot be sufficiently maintained, expectant mothers may develop a disease referred to as 'Pregnancy Tumor' which is characterized by the swelling of the gums. This disease is monitored in periodic hygiene appointments and patients recover after their hormonal balance is stabilized following their pregnancy.

Another matter that concerns expectant mothers is the oral health of their prospective babies. The general health of the expectant mothers directly effects the health of their babies. There is usually nothing to worry about the oral health of babies of pregnant women who visit their dentists for regular controls and are careful about their diet. However, the consumption of various antibiotics (like Tetracycline) or tap water with high fluoride content when pregnant can cause irregularities in the form and color of the teeth of infants.
