ZirconiumThe rise in aesthetical expectations have resulted in an increase in the search for foundations that are of the same color as teeth, instead of the conventional metal foundations. Although fully ceramic systems have been successfully used for single tooth restorations and short bridge prosthesis in the frontal areas for many years, they are not suitable for use in sections of the mouth that are subjected to relatively greater chewing forces or bridge prosthesis that have a length exceeding three teeth.

Zirconium is a highly resilient material that has long been used with success in the aerospace industry, automotive industry and in hip prosthesis in the field of orthopedics. With the increase in widespread use of computer aided design and production systems in dentistry in recent years, zirconium has begun to be used for the preparation of foundations for crown and bridge prosthesis with success.

With the use of zirconium, it has now become possible to achieve restorations possessing the same color as the patients' teeth, without the use of any metals, in every case where conventional metal supported bridge prosthesis were traditionally applied. Zirconium, apart from being resistant to high levels of heat and impact; is an element that is lightweight, that does not conduct heat and electricity and which light can permeate.

Furthermore, it is a healthy material that does not cause gum problems or bad breath. A 3D scanner is used to scan the dental impressions of your teeth and further modeling is conducted in a computer environment using the data acquired through such scans.

The models are later used to design the form of the prosthesis in a virtual environment with the help of specialized computer software. The foundations of the teeth obtained in light of these designs are later manufactured from zirconium blocks using computerized milling machines, untouched by human hands. The manufactured zirconium foundations are prepared for processing with porcelain after being sintered for a considerable amount of time under high temperatures for them to gain full resistance and to acquire their intended colors.

We are now able to obtain resilient and aesthetic restorations that do not contain any metals through the use of high-tech zirconium oxide with great success.

Aesthetic and natural looking teeth are a key factor in forming social relationships and they also serve to provide people with self confidence. Perfect teeth and smiles play an important role in defining physical health and successful social and professional relations. The search for perfect restorations that are both aesthetic and can imitate the natural form in the best possible manner have resulted in the development of fully ceramic systems. The optical characteristics and integrity of these materials allow the perfect reproduction of natural tooth tissue.

The light reflected on the restorations are transmitted to the gums after being refracted through several layers of ceramic. As a result, gums obtain the desired tone of pink and appear lively and fresh just as they would with natural teeth. With metal supported restorations, the light that falls on the surface of the teeth is reflected, resulting in an unnatural, opaque appearance and a grey colored band that is visible on the edges of the gums.

One of the advantages is that the time required for the production of the infrastructure has been shortened. If requested, a person can obtain a new smile in only one day. The aesthetic quality of the prosthetic teeth is very high and light permeability and appearance is very similar to natural teeth. The porcelain blocks used in production are prepared under stringent factory conditions to ensure uniform physical characteristics of the material and to minimize the margin of error. Due to the fact that the number of intermediary processes required for application are decreased, they allow dentists to save considerable amounts of time. No hot-cold sensitivity issues arise, because zirconium oxide possesses insulating qualities.

Zirconium oxide is a tissue compatible material and does not cause any allergies. Results of research conducted on the subject have proven that it is perfectly compatible with gum tissue. Gingival recession that occurs naturally due to old age cannot be stopped. Although, due to the fact that the prepared crowns are highly compatible with the surrounding teeth and gums, gingival recession resulting from gum infections will not occur.
